Albert Maina, who’s 26, left Howley on Monday and was last seen in Corner Brook on Tuesday.

He’s about 5’5″ tall with slim build and has black hair and dark eyes.

Maina may be travelling in a blue 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck, licence plate CWP 770.

Speaking on Your VOCM Mornings, meteorologist Graham MacDonald gave some insight on what festival-goers can expect later today.

It won’t be blistering hot or anywhere near it, but it will be pleasant enough with sunny breaks and temperatures around 16 or 17.

This year’s festival runs today from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will feature many special guests including VOCM’s Russell Bowers and Greg Smith. There will be no concessions or vendors this year (that means no beer tent) so patrons will have to provide their own snacks and beverages.

Admission is free but donations will be accepted on-site.

Gas is up by 4.2 cents per litre, diesel on the island and in Labrador costs about 3 cents more, and furnace oil on the island jumped by roughly 2 1/2 cents.

The two accused, each 18 years old, are up on two counts of first degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw did not release any information on the two accused regarding their history and whether they were known to police.

As he did at a news conference earlier in the week, Chief Demkiw called for changes in the justice system so that people who have guns are not released by the system to take to the streets and commit further crimes.

“We are looking at people out in our community serving sentences for having illegal firearms who then, while serving sentences in the community, go out and commit more crimes – sometimes killing people,” said the chief.

“That’s a problem in my view. I’m telling you that this is a problem. We have violent offenders in our communities serving sentences and then going out and committing more crimes – sometimes taking a life.

“That’s a problem and it needs to be addressed.”

The new ER is three times the size of the old one and consists of several different waiting areas to keep people moving and speed up access.

A 58-year-old man died after a single-vehicle crash ten days ago.

RCMP say there was an earlier altercation involving the deceased, which they are investigating. Based on concerns and conversations going on in the community, they believe it is likely that there are witnesses with surveillance footage related to the altercation or the crash who have not contacted police directly.

The Child Death Review Committee has recommended that government incorporate such a program into the K-3, or primary, level.

Dan McGettigan, the executive director of Turnings, commends the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association for endorsing the recommendation.

McGettigan says there’s no short-term fix to reduce the prevalence of drugs, weapons, violence and homelessness but the schools are a good place to start. He says it’s a good idea to send professionals such as social workers and others into the schools.

“That way they can work with the students and also work with the parents at home,” says McGettigan.

“At least that would make a dent because we can’t just throw up our hands – we have to do something about it.”

He told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that we have to take a deep dive into restorative justice because it makes no sense to have people locked up if they would be better served by doing programming and availing of treatment.

He also says the situation at HMP is not good with inmates, many of whom are on remand, double and triple bunking.
