An eastbound box truck crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a pickup near the Allandale Road exit just before 6:00 yesterday.

Three people were sent to hospital for treatment, one of whom has since been released. The injuries suffered are not believed to be life-threatening.

RNC are asking witnesses or anyone with video footage in the lead-up to or immediately following the crash to give them a call at 709-729-8000.

Keyin has five schools across the island, including the one in Stephenville, plus four learning centres.

The VP rural with the college, Andre Perrier (PAIR-ee-ur), says they offer students a hybrid model, which means they can do coursework online and/or in person.

“We will be offering our accounting payroll business administration program, we’re working on a new cybersecurity program, we have health care programs and many other offerings,” says Perrier.

The school has capacity for 90 students.

Earlier this week, Gushue was named High Performance Director for USA Curling, after being sought out following his retirement last season.

Gushue admits there will be a learning curve, but says he’s up to the challenge.

“It’s quite a bit different. I don’t know how different it is at this point. Over the next number of months, I’m going to have to learn the system a little bit better and things that they do differently down there than we did here in Canada,” he says.

“At the end of the day, it’s still the game of curling and that’s something that I know very well and I think that’s going to translate pretty easily.”

Gushue says he plans to work and stay in St. John’s and travel to the U.S. during big events.

Ottawa has announced some details of an ambitious plan to double the electricity grid by 2050 – and the Prime Minister mentioned Newfoundland/Labrador and Quebec in today’s news conference.

Mark Carney is talking about connecting provincial power grids across the country.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s attempts to gain access to the Quebec grid has been denied at all levels over the decades, but Carney is indicating that there will be consultations with the provinces.

“We need a partnership across the country to build new hydro, new nuclear, renewable power. It’s hydro in Quebec and Newfoundland and nuclear in New Brunswick and Ontario.”

Carney says Quebec’s plans over the next decade would cost about $145-billion, but that Ottawa will be offering a refundable tax credit that will amount to a lot of money and be a major incentive.

He says it will allow Hydro Quebec to accelerate its plans.

The PM mentioned that the hydro developments on the Churchill affect another province as well, namely, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The two provinces reached an MOU on hydro development in Labrador a year-and-a-half ago, but that deal is in limbo with the current government’s take on it expected next week.

The Prime Minister also says his government will make it easier for Canadians to switch to electricity from more expensive forms of energy, such as oil and propane.

Newhook has scored six goals and has one assist so far in the post-season.

Dr. Cynthia Slade appreciates that NLHS is listening to doctors and is “actively engaged” in gathering feedback, but “significant workflow disruptions and delays in accessing and acting on critical information” remain.

“We’re hearing from doctors in the hospital that everything is taking much longer which means that they have less time to spend providing care to patients. There’s ongoing concerns about patient safety, particularly where there’s gaps in information, and system functionality, which can affect timely follow-up and delivery of care.”

She told Your VOCM Mornings “we heard from one surgeon yesterday who said that they’re forced to reduce the number of surgeries that they’re doing because they cannot perform those surgeries with the added workload required by the new CorCare system.”

Dr. Slade says even on-site trainers to help staff with the transition were stumped when it came to some basic ordering questions.

“For example, one doctor said that they had five CorCare trainers in their office this week, and not one of them could explain how to order a routine test like an EEG or a Pulmonary Function Test.”

The new $14.4-million bridge will be built at a higher elevation than the current structure to allow for increased water levels.

In addition, a new access point west of the bridge will be created featuring auxiliary lanes, an access road, a parking area, and a multi-use pathway that will connect to the existing day-use park.

The Trans Canada Highway will be realigned.

The project is funded 50/50 by the federal and provincial governments.

Residents are concerned after a series of violent incidents in recent years ranging from a murder last summer on Salter Place, to a young man who was beaten with chains at a home on Barachois Street last week.

Ward 3 councillor Greg Noseworthy attended last night’s event which was hosted by Happy City St. John’s.

Calling the discussion that took place last night “frank,” he shares the frustration and concerns raised by many.

“There has been an increase in various incidents,” says Noseworthy, “whether you’re talking about petty crime, theft, assaults, or needles, those types of things. It’s not something we’re used to,” says Noseworthy, who grew up in Cowan Heights and still considers it home.

Area MHA Keith White, who has raised similar concerns in the House of Assembly, was also in attendance. Noseworthy says the issues surrounding rising crime are complex.

‘We as a group of people have to say…enough’

And it’s not just Cowan Heights. One caller from the Empire Avenue area near Ropewalk Lane summed up how many metro-area residents are feeling these days on VOCM Open Line : “We have grown to where this is accepted ‘oh ya, it’s bad and everything else,’…but we, as a group of people have to say ‘no, that’s enough.”

Councillor says supports are needed

Councillor Noseworthy says at the end of the day it’s a poverty issue, and exacerbating the problem is organized crime and addiction.

“It’s a reality that we’re facing in our community, and we need to get more supports out there for people. We also need to make sure that the RNC are supported, that the court system is supported, so we’re dealing with organized crime, but still supporting folks so that this isn’t an issue in 20 years’ time.”

Leader Jim Dinn says government needs to stop “dragging its feet” on implementing safeguards around data protection, AI, and oversight, and introduce the appropriate legislation to address evolving technology and privacy issues.

Dinn says the province has seen two major data breaches in recent years, including the 2021 healthcare system breach and the 2024 PowerSchool cyber attack.

Privacy Commissioner Kerry Hatfield outlined weaknesses in government oversight into how data is stored by third-party contractors in a report into the PowerSchool breach released earlier this week.

Data through May 9 showed ER wait times spiked from just over two hours to nearly three and a half hours for an initial assessment by a physician.

It also revealed that surgeries fell from 576 to 391 in a one-week period, lab tests fell by some 30-thousand to 173-thousand, while medical imaging exams and endoscopy services fell by some 25-30 per cent.

NLHS Interim CEO Ron Johnson says many of those numbers are coming down and he expects times to drop once staff get up to speed.

“Emergency room wait times have been long in Newfoundland, but they’re long all across Canada. That’s an issue. This system should help with this,” he told reporters.

“There’s one piece of this system that was put in for emergency room use. It’s called an EDIS, an Emergency Department Information System. Often in busy emergency rooms, it’s a lot of chaos, and often, sometimes you can lose track of what’s happening. Now, with this EDIS system, everything is timestamped. You can’t lose track of it. It’s in your face.”
