Tom Davis, who represents Ward 4, was suspended with pay for one month after an investigation found comments he made created a “poisoned” work environment.

The comments piggybacked on a podcast, but Councillor Lynn Hammond says the program promotes the idea that women should stay at home with their children and not work, and that not doing so increases instances of mental disorders.

On VOCM Open Line this morning with host Brian Callahan, Coun. Hammond said the issue and the hurtful comments go well beyond a single issue such as the podcast.

She says Coun. Davis did not follow the restrictions on the investigator’s report that all of council was required to follow.

“He ignored the legal direction that we all received to keep the report confidential,” says Hammond.

“Women – not just women, but others as well – but people do not report inappropriate workplace activities for the fear of retribution. That’s why it was supposed to be confidential.”)

Davis will be back in his chair at the July meeting of council in a couple of weeks, but Hammond says the issues go deep.

“Nobody is talking about the fact that we have a city councillor, who was able over a period of time, for multiple incidents, to get away with his behaviour unchecked. When he was checked and we went through the formal process, he did not follow the rules,” says Coun. Hammond.

Stacey-Lynn Kenny, who was 19, and her father, Corey, were on a motorcycle in Aquaforte around 8:30 Monday night when it struck a moose. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Aquaforte town manager Aaron Croft says this week’s tragedy follows a fatal moose-vehicle collision in the community a few years ago.

He says moose sightings on that stretch of road are constant, and daily reports of near-misses have become routine. He says the lack of action on the part of government amounts to nothing short of negligence. The town is also calling on area MHA Loyola O’Driscoll to speak out on their behalf.

The crash has left an indelible mark on the region. Stacey-Lynn was a hockey player with the Southern Shore Breakers. Her coach, Donny Gosse, says this has been one tough week.

Murray Hupman says they will be making their submissions on the situation to the board next week, and then the following Monday a decision will be made.

Meanwhile, on the collective bargaining front, Hupman says they are going into mediation with Unifor on Monday, and there is another mediation session scheduled for the end of July.

He dismisses the notion that Marine Atlantic has been dragging its heels through the negotiation process.

He says it is “just the way the process unfolds,” and that if there was a perfect formula to conduct negotiations these situations would never happen.

Federal minister Joanne Thompson and Marine Atlantic President and CEO Murray Hupman were in Argentia this morning for the announcement.

The work includes ramp upgrades in Argentia, dock extensions and auto-mooring upgrades in Port aux Basques, electrical improvements to support shore power in both ports, and navigation improvements in Port aux Basques Harbour, including the removal of Vardy’s Rock.

The Crown corporation has had that rocky outcrop on its hit list for years.

This round of projects follows $80-million worth of upgrades in North Sydney announced in Cape Breton yesterday for dock and terminal improvements.

The aircraft, which had 61 passengers on board, was en route to Halifax from Newark yesterday afternoon.

The first officer was able to take over and the plane safely landed at Boston Logan around 1:40 local time.

In a statement to VOCM News, Massachusetts State Police say the pilot was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The passengers were rebooked on other flights.

Over the last week or so, Paul Dinn has been visiting some schools across the province ahead of the summer break.

While schools will be closed for the next couple of months, the work now begins to prepare for when the doors swing open again after Labour Day.

Dinn, who was blown away by some of the great things happening in K-12 classrooms, says he understands there are several issues that need to be addressed.

He says teachers are doing their best to identify and handle issues, however finding the proper supports continues to be a struggle.

“Our classrooms are becoming more complex,” says Dinn; “I think per capita, we have some of the most complex classrooms in country to be honest with you.” He says they’re trying to better prepare teachers by providing more information during PD days, however they need more supports and student assistants – something he says government is working on.

Some sites are abandoned for an entire weekend, but the same restrictions apply. Many just simply breeze through without taking their foot off the gas.

The issue emerges every year, but the tangle at the Foxtrap Access/TCH junction over the past two weeks has brought it to the fore again.

Transportation Minister Barry Petten says the signs and restrictions have to remain in place during active and inactive times because of the bridge on the overpass.

“We only have one lane on that bridge – and you’re on a highway,” says the minister.

“I get the argument because I have wondered that myself, but it’s still a construction zone and you can’t take down signs in the area of bridge work. I would rather err on the side of caution.”

There is currently one wildfire burning in the province – a 10-hectare blaze near Labrador city that isn’t expected to have any substantial spread.

There have been 61 wildfires in the province so far this year, down substantially from 136 by the same time in 2025 – a 55 per cent decrease.

Weather conditions were the driving factor behind the number of forest fires experienced last year, with little precipitation during the winter and an unusually dry spring and summer.

Nevaeh Denine passed away in 2018 at the age of nine following a battle with neuroblastoma.

Several years earlier she had an idea to start a lemonade stand to raise money for other sick kids.

That thought, which captured the hearts of many across the province, continues on today as an annual fundraiser put off by the Nevaeh’s Angel Foundation.

Organizer Stephanie O’Brien says she has so many memories from helping with the event over the years, but the one that will stick with her forever is the first one they did outside of St. Kevin’s Junior High in the Goulds.

She recalls seeing a massive lineup of people waiting to get their lemonade, and how they weren’t expecting so many people. O’Brien laughs recalling how they had already bought all the lemonade from Bidgood’s Supermarket so they had to buy boxes of apple and orange juice. “It was that moment of seeing….(that) they’re not here for anything other than Nevaeh, and to help her help other people.”

This year’s fundraiser is taking place at the Paradise Double Ice Complex on Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.
