Confirmed reports of polar bear sightings in the area of Bonavista North have prompted cautions from officials.
Conservation officers are monitoring a polar bear that was recently photographed in the area of New-Wes-Valley. Now, they’re offering advice to avoid a potentially dangerous encounter.
Keep pets inside or under close supervision, travel in groups when possible, never approach a fresh carcass, and make sure to properly dispose of your garbage.
If you see a polar bear, remain calm and quietly back away, staying downwind of the animal. If the bear notices you, give it plenty of space to get away, do not run, and avoid direct eye contact with the bear.
Anyone who sees a polar bear in the area is asked to contact the local wildlife office in Gambo at 709-674-4625, or 709-674-1521 after hours.
