A local photographer has had his work recognized by a prestigious national wildlife publication.
Canadian Geographic has chosen a photograph taken by Michael Winsor of St. John’s of a humpback whale breaching off Trinity as one of the winners of a wildlife photography competition.
The giant creature can be seen almost completely out of the water with the setting sun as its backdrop. The entire sequence of the behemoth rising from the water and splashing back down onto the surface can be seen on Winsor’s photography blog.
Winsor’s photo was chosen in Canadian Geographic’s Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year competition in the Animals in Action category.
He says the win is not just good for him as a photographer, it’s good for the province.
He says the picture could be displayed at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, which means even more exposure for the province.
