A Newfoundlander recently won a medal at the World Powerlifting Championships in Sweden and set a record in the process.
Maria Htee of St. John’s became the first Canadian woman to win the Classic Open under 57 kg category at the competition. She squatted 172.5 kg, bench pressed 102.5 kg and deadlifted 197.5 kg for a total of 472.5 kg, or over 1,000 pounds.
Htee is a personal trainer at GoodLife Fitness in Atlantic Place. She came to St. John’s with her family from Thailand 13 years ago and developed an interest in bodybuilding.
