A Newfoundlander in Alberta who was forced to evacuate due to burning wildfire in the area says although tense, the evacuation process was a smooth one.
Robyn Dwyer is originally from the island. She and her family have evacuated High Level due to the wildfires as crews continue to battle the blaze burning a few kilometers from the town.
Dwyer says on Monday morning they were told to make their house more fire-smart, and at that point knew things weren’t very good and began to pack up.
She says at 11:30 a.m. officials evacuated the hospital and put the community on evacuation alert. By 4:00, the order came through and they left.
She says the fire is yet to make it into the community of High Level and everything is still standing.
Dwyer and her family had to travel to Slave Lake to register at the evacuation centre before continuing onto Edmonton as crews continue to fight the blaze.
