Thousands of jobs, and billions of dollars...that's what is headed our way with the Hebron development. The deal was officially signed at the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel over the noon hour today. Government estimates the deal will mean 28 billion dollars in royalties, based on today's oil prices, and up to 3 thousand jobs for the province. Oil is expected to start pumping in 2017. False Alarm Causes Quite a Stir - Aug 19, 2008

Police are investigating a false alarm in the Brigus/Cupids area last night after receiving reports of a ball of fire in the sky. RCMP Corporal Tom Murray says the object turned out to be a firework called a Chinese Lantern. Murray says it was set off on a restaurant parking lot on the main road in Brigus by some young people. Murray says it isn't a traditional firework. It's a miniature hot air balloon about 2 to 3 feet wide. It's powered the same as a hot air balloon with a device at the bottom which is ignited causing the air in the balloon to expand and allows it to lift. The incident caused quite a stir. Murray says local fire departments, rescue officials, a Cormorant out of Gander and a seaplane from Paddy's Pond worked quickly in an air, land, and sea search.Murray says the firework landed in a wooded area after gaining a lot of height. RCMP say they have no suspects as they continue their investigation.

Innu Nation Donates to Daffodil Place - Aug 20, 2008

Another significant contribution to the Daffodil Place Campaign this morning. Grand Chief of the Innu Nation Mark Nui made the announcement at the Capital Hotel this morning. Nui says Daffodil Place is an important part of helping people afflicted with Cancer cope with the life threatening disease. Nui says helping the sick, especially elders has been a way of life for the Innu and that's why they've decided to invest 125-thousand dollars into the campaign. Nui says illnesses like cancer effect everyone, including the Innu. Nui says illnesses like cancer do not stop at age, race, language or skin colour....and the Innu are no exception.

Chair of the Daffodil Place Campaign John Steele says he's humbled and honoured by the generous donation by the Innu, who often face greater challenges than most. Steele says they have to leave the comforts of home and culture to go and place their lives in the hands of those they don't know. Steele also provided an update on Daffodil Place. Steele says with Daffodil Place well under construction, the campaign (including the Innu Nation's money) has now surpassed the 5-million dollar mark of their seven-million dollar goal.

Cancer survivor Mary-Jane Nui of Sheshashui says she cannot express the importance of such a facility. Nui says she's been cancer free for 9 years and wishes she could've had somewhere like Daffodil Place to stay when she was in St. John's for treatment.
