The province has lost another giant in the local theatre community.
Celebrated actor, educator and director, Kevin Lewis passed away this week.
Lewis, who appeared in The Boys of St. Vincent, Misery Harbour and Random Passage, but is best remembered for his mentorship role in helping and educating young actors.
Local actor and comedian Mark Critch recently presented Lewis with an ACTRA Award of Excellence.
He says Lewis was a huge influence on his life and career.
“I was going to Holy Heart, and my mom went in to see the drama teacher there,” says Critch. She told him her son was interested in acting and Lewis gave her a tour of the school and said “Madam, I’m going to make your son a star.” Critch joked that his mother came home and told him “You’re not doing theatre arts, there’s something wrong with that man.”
Critch calls Lewis a “cool teacher” who inspired everyone.
“He gave people a love of theatre, and then helped them achieve their goals in performing, and stayed their friends for life. There are an awful lot of students of Kevin Lewis out there.”
My high school drama teacher & lifelong pal Kevin Lewis is gone. He taught me how to act & how to ‘act up’ . He was known for work on & off screen but his legacy is the army of young minds he helped shape & ignite. He was brilliant, hilarious, loving & brave. RIP & ‘giddy up’ pic.twitter.com/ucJOTtB8hO
