The health care system on the Burin Peninsula got a major boost yesterday thanks to the 2024 Radiothon.
A partnership between the Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation and the VOCM Cares Foundation, the radiothon raised $185,000 to go toward various efforts at the hospitals and medical clinics in Grand Bank, St. Lawrence and Burin.
Paul Pike, the former mayor of St. Lawrence and current MHA for the area, boosted the total on behalf of government to the tune of $50,000.
The money goes toward a “Staxi” wheelchair system for the hospital in Burin, upgrades to long-term care facilities in St. Lawrence and Grand Bank, as well as gas cards and accommodation vouchers for chemotherapy, dialysis and urgent-care patients travelling to medical appointments beyond the Burin Peninsula.
