The Schizophrenia Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is staging a program later this month for those with a loved one who experienced their first episode of psychosis fairly recently.
Board member Liz Rowe says the Family Recovery Journey is a program which they have offered before, designed primarily to meet people at the very beginning of their journey.
The first session will be about defining schizophrenia as well as causes and treatment before moving on to a session of how to communicate with a loved one who might be actively in a psychotic episode.
Rowe says they go through how to manage crises with psychosis, but there are also people who repeat the program so it is sprinkled with elements for those who are further along in their journey. She also says the groups are fairly small to allow for better interaction.
The two sessions take place July 12 and 13 at the Mental Health and Addictions Centre but people can also attend virtually.
