Alex Newhook of St. John’s is going to Denver. The Colorado Avalanche, a playoff team, took the St. John’s forward with the 16th selection in the NHL Draft last night in Vancouver. He was available when the Montreal Canadiens announced the 15th selection, but the Habs went with American Cole Caufield. The Americans had more first rounders than did Canada.

Newhook played for Victoria last year in the B.C. Junior A Hockey League, racking up 102 points. He has been invited to Team Canada’s summer development camp in advance of the World Junior Hockey Championship.
Alex’s family is in Vancouver for the draft. His father, Shawn, told VOCM’s Paddy Daly on the Morning Show yesterday that Alex is able to keep his emotions in check and not get too high or too low. Shawn says Alex is level-headed and is able to keep his wits about him. He has mental toughness, which is a good attribute.
One last thing: you may have noticed that Alex Newhook’s buddies are here to support him…
