If you’re looking for icebergs off and around the coasts of Newfoundland, there’s an app for that!
Iceberg Alley – Iceberg and Whale Sightings is an app that allows users to view and post iceberg and whale sightings in real time, with descriptions and photos.
App users help each other find the best spots to experience whales and icebergs as they make their way through “Iceberg Alley” in the waters from Greenland to coastal Newfoundland.
Brandi Gosse created the app and says she doesn’t have an exact count on the number of icebergs or posts but knows many people are viewing the app.
She says so far this year there have been around 11,000—an indication that people are coming back and actively using the app to check and see new posts about iceberg and whale sightings.
Some parts of the free app are accessible immediately, but you do need to create an account to view and post sightings.
She says the reason for this is to prevent spam posts. Once you’ve created your profile you can check out the most recent posts in the newsfeed, find sightings by location using the map and filter searches using time period and type of sighting.
