The old swine station in Portugal Cove-St. Philips has been destroyed by fire. Crews were called out at about 6:30 this morning after somebody saw thick smoke on the Portugal Cove Road side of the town.
The buildings were used by the provincial government to raise pigs from the 1960’s to the early 1990’s but have long been abandoned and there was no electricity to the property. The station is located behind the Tilthouse Bakery.

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the Portugal Cove-St. Philips Fire Department responded. They had to cut through a gate and travel down a long dirt road to reach the area but the wooden buildings were ablaze when they arrived.
