The Pippy Park Commission has shot down a request to set aside an off-leash area near Three Pond Barrens.
Chair of the Pippy Park Commission Sean Kelly says they considered a recent request from the Coalition for Off-Leash Animals, but in the end decided that it was not a good idea for a variety of reasons.
He says the park is for everyone’s use and it’s not fair to some of those users to be approached by dogs that are not on leash.
He says users have no way of knowing if the dog that is approaching them is friendly or not. In addition to that there are concerns about the impact of dogs on wildlife.
Kelly admits that dog owners are already using the Three Pond Barrens in that way, and signs will be going up reminding people that dogs must be on a leash.
