Today marks the 9th anniversary of Hurricane Igor’s landfall in Eastern Newfoundland.
The storm was the most destructive tropical cyclone on record to have hit this province.
It caused the death of 81-year-old Allan Duffett of Random Island. Duffet was swept out to sea when his driveway collapsed into an overflowing river.
Winds reached more than 170 km/h at the peak of the storm.
Tens of thousands of people were without power and hundreds of communities were isolated by the storm’s effects.
Igor left its mark on the province and caused tens a millions of dollars worth of damage.
StatsCan describes Igor as a 50-100 years event and says that prior to the naming of storms there was one of similar strength in 1935.
