77 years ago today the SS Caribou sank off the coast of Newfoundland.
The ferry traveled between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port aux Basques during the second world war.
On the night of October 14th, 1942 the SS Caribou, accompanied by Canadian Navy ship, HMCS Grandmere was torpedoed by a Nazi German U-Boat.
More than 100 people were lost when the ship went down, many were civilians and off duty soldiers.
It is still not known where exactly the ship lies today.
Shipwreck Preservation Society of Newfoundland and Labrador President, Neil Burgess says with the help of funding they hope to locate the ship, although locating it may take some time.
Burgess says it was a tragic event that rocked both Canada and Newfoundland.
He says many families in Newfoundland were touched by this event and stories from that day are a part of their history. A lot of Newfoundlanders will be thinking about it today, especially in Port Aux Basques where many members of the SS Caribou’s crew were from.
