One man has been charged with impaired driving following a dramatic crash in Mount Pearl early this morning.
It occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on Commonwealth Avenue, between Sunrise Avenue and Edinburgh Drive.
Police were responding to reports of a car speeding and stunting on Topsail Road around 1:30 a.m.
They then learned that a car had struck and cracked off a light pole on Commonwealth Avenue, leaving debris, including a transformer, scattered along the road.
That left about 1,700 people in the area without power, which has since been restored. It also forced police to shut down that section of Commonwealth Avenue as they carried out their investigation.
Police found the car but the two people inside had ran from the scene.
However, they caught up with them in the area of Brookfield Road, with help from the K9 unit, and arrested the 22-year-old driver.
The young St. John’s man was charged with impaired driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.
He was released to appear in court at a later date.
