Repairs are underway to restore the steeple of a church heavily damaged by fire earlier this month in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Fire crews found smoke and flames pouring from St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church in the late hours of October 18. While there were no injuries, Fire Chief Vince MacKenzie described the damage as extensive.
Yesterday, the church posted that its steeple was removed to facilitate repairs. The approximately 3,900-pound structure was removed and carefully lowered down by a crane, before being taken from the site.
St. Matthew’s Presbyterian posted that workers made the monumental task seem relatively easy.
Photos posted on Facebook show the beginning stages of the restoration efforts, as well as some of the damage sustained by the building in the blaze.
The action to renew the building is being applauded by members of the community, in preserving one of the town’s historic structures.
