A public meeting is taking place this week on a proposed development that would see a major facelift to parking garage in Downtown St. John’s.
The proposal has been on council’s radar since late 2012.
Sonco Group wants to build a four storey hotel on top of the AP Parking Garage at 1 Clift’s-Baird’s Cove in downtown St. John’s.
The new height of the building with the hotel would exceed the maximum height of 11 storeys allowed in the area, but would bring the building in line with Atlantic Place next door.
Mayor Danny Breen says the design of the building has undergone some reworking, and says they are now at a point where it can go to a public meeting.
Breen states that he won’t be making any decisions on the project until the final information on it is before him, but does say it has a lot of interesting elements, including changes to the garage itself. He says most people will agree that the building is an eyesore to have in the centre on the downtown.
The public meeting is happening this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
