The President of the province’s largest public sector union says the care and compassion that workers have shown over the course of one of the province’s worst storms in history is remarkable.
NAPE represents employees in healthcare, communication centres, MUN Dining Hall, enforcement officers, municipal and provincial plow operators, social workers and many more.
President Jerry Earle says some have worked between 48 and 60 straight hours.
He says hospital workers from house keeping, dietary and more provided food, cleaned facilities and helped with resident-patient care, and that’s just one example of many.
Earle says there were homecare workers in client’s homes who stayed with their client for the entire duration of the storm as family members couldn’t get home. He says the list of examples like that goes on and on.
There are some employees who are still working into this morning, who have been there since Friday.
Earle says when talking to staff, they were all very proud of being able to help. He says there were very few complaints, and the care and compassion that people have shown, as well as the understanding from the general public, for the most part has been unbelievable.
