Canadian Red Cross volunteers are helping three people who have been recently displaced by fire in the province, including one couple who spent several days in hospital.
Last Friday, a blaze in Black Tickle gutted a bungalow and sent two people to hospital in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with minor injuries. The two were discharged yesterday, and have been assisted with emergency purchases of basic items, clothing and food.
The Red Cross says friends and neighbours in the community of less than 100 people have also rallied to provide the couple with a temporary place to stay, and other supports.
Then, a two-storey house on Feild Street in St. John’s was damaged by fire on Saturday night.
Red Cross volunteers arranged emergency housing, plus food and clothes purchases, for one man who rented a room in the house. He was uninjured.
However, another tenant rescued from the house was taken to hospital for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.
