A social justice organization calling on government to make the minimum wage a living wage isn’t at all satisfied with a planned series of increases.
It goes up 25 cents April 1 to $11.65 and will go to $12.65 eighteen months later. There will also be increases over that period based on the Consumer Price Index.
Alyse Stuart of Common Front NL says anything is better than nothing but $12.65 is not a living wage, especially in St. John’s. She says the $15 per hour wage is only the first step as the living wage in St. John’s is $18.65.
Jordan Brown, the NDP MHA for Lab West, sees it as only a first step.
