A plastic bag that was nearly a gull’s undoing, ultimately helped to save its life in a dramatic sequence of events that played out at Quidi Vidi Lake Sunday afternoon.
Photographer Mike Winsor was down at the lake shooting the birds when he noticed the young Icelandic gull flying with a black plastic bag caught around its foot.

Unfortunately, says Winsor, so did a bald eagle, which swept in for what it thought might be an easy meal.
Winsor says the bag was acting like a parachute, and slowing the gull’s progress, but ultimately, it ended up saving the bird.
When the two birds landed in the lake, the bag filled with water, and the eagle couldn’t lift the bird and bag together into the air. The young gull eventually freed itself of the bag and flew off.
