The provincial government has now been added as a defendant in a lawsuit filed against the NLC by the former head of the corporation.
Steve Winter was removed as CEO of the NLC back in January of 2018. In documents filed in court in September of last year, Winter claimed his termination package gave him what was essentially compensation for one year of salary, but he says he’s entitled to two years pay and benefits.
The documents claim Winter should be paid an extra $239,000, which was his annual salary, over $60,00 for annual leave for two years, and almost $23,000 for unpaid leave and other benefits which would bring that total to well over $300,000.
In its statement of defense, the NLC claimed that Winter was appointed by cabinet and therefore it was not responsible for hiring or firing him.
At Supreme Court, Winter’s lawyer asked the court to expand the statement of claim to include the Lieutenant Governor in Council, which means the province, as a second defendant.
The request was approved. The matter will be back in court at a yet to be set date.
