St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says estimates on the cost of hosting the 2025 Canada Summer Games are still being worked on.
The city has officially launched the process to make a bid for the country’s largest sporting event.
The games alternate every two years between winter and summer events. Corner Brook hosted the 1999 Canada Winter Games while St. John’s last hosted the Canada Summer Games back in 1977.

Mayor Breen says the city is now working on a bid to ensure the Canada Games Committee that it’s capable of hosting the games.
The overall cost, however, is something that has yet to be determined and may require cooperation with surrounding municipalities. One of the facilities, the Aquarena, was built for the games over 40 years ago.
He says the pool and existing track might need to be upgraded or replaced while upgrades have already taken place on King George V Park and St. Pat’s Ball Park. That, and the use of facilities throughout the Northeast Avalon, means they’re in “pretty good shape facility-wise.”
