Mayor Danny Breen says despite the costs, he thinks hosting the Canada Summer Games could reap great economic benefits for the metro region.
The provincial government and capital city officially launched the bidding process to host the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
Breen says although the operating cost is in the $30-40 million dollar range, the games have turned a profit for the last 30 years.
He sees it as a positive in every way. The city can do much needed upgrades to facilities and increase economic activity – all while having a positive impact on the province’s finances.
He says the economic spinoff could be in the $100 million dollar range – that’s the equivalent of 16 national championships happening in the province at once.
