A bed and breakfast operation in the Gander area has closed up, citing competition from Airbnb.
Marilyn Feltham of Gander is asking Hospitality NL to address what she sees as unfair competition as Airbnb providers are unregulated. Feltham says as a result, there are now no bed and breakfasts on the Eastport Peninsula – and that’s a tourism hotspot.
She says her expenses far surpass those of Airbnb accommodations.
Feltham says she pays insurance and a lot of town taxes because they are on water and sewer, but that Airbnb’s pay no insurance and do not have municipal taxes where they live.
