An announcement is expected this evening, marking one of the darkest periods of Newfoundland and Labrador history.
Premier Dwight Ball will announce the repatriation of the remains of Demasduit and her husband Nonosabasut—two of the last Beothuk.
Efforts have been underway for years to have the remains, which have been lying in a Scottish museum for 200 years, returned to Newfoundland where they belong.
Sagimaw Mi’sel Joe of the Miapukek Mi’kmaq led the charge on having the remains brought back to Newfoundland.
The Beothuk died out as a culture with the passing of Shanawdithit in 1829. She was buried in St. Mary’s Anglican cemetery on the south side of St. John’s.
Tonight’s announcement takes place at 7 p.m. at the Rooms.
