Local musicians are mourning the loss of a music icon.
John Prine passed away this week of complications due to COVID-19. He was 73.
Prine is being remembered as one of the greatest songwriters of the last five decades. Among those offering tributes to Prine’s life and work are Bruce Springsteen, Stephen King and Bonnie Raitt.
Over here on E Street, we are crushed by the loss of John Prine. John and I were "New Dylans" together in the early 70s and he was never anything but the lovliest guy in the world. A true national treasure and a songwriter for the ages. We send our love and prayers to his family.

Stephen Green of Fairgale, speaking after it was revealed that Prine was sick, says Prine was a huge influence for many Newfoundland musicians as well.
Green says John Prine culture is ingrained in Newfoundland and Labrador, and he grew up listening to Prine’s music around kitchen tables, and at social gatherings.
Green echoed the sentiments of many in remembering Prine’s extraordinary songwriting.
He has “a wit, a charm, he pulls the heartstrings when he really needs to, quirky, really unconventional,” says Green in describing Prine’s skill. He calls him one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
