Only hours after the provincial government threatened to act on its own and print and distribute salmon tags, DFO has come out with the Atlantic Salmon Management Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador.
All rivers on the island are open from June 1 to September 7 and in Labrador June 15 to September 15.
Retention limits vary from one to two fish on scheduled rivers. However, anglers are not permitted to keep even a single salmon on unscheduled rivers. The catch and release limit for most rivers is three. No tags will be available for non-residents because of the COVID-19 restrictions on travel.
Provincial minister Gerry Byrne likes the plan but says it should have come out much sooner to allow them time to print and distribute tags and licences.
Details are available in the NL Anglers Guide.
