Ottawa is coming to the aid of the fishery, aquaculture industry and farmers.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today $470-M for harvesters. The Fish Harvester Benefit will apply to those who have experienced at least a 25 per cent drop in income.
The fund will cover 75 per cent of the loss. As well, there will be non-repayable grants of $10,000 for harvesters who own their own boats.
As for anyone worried about EI, Trudeau says people in the fishery can apply for benefits based on previous years’ income.
Ottawa is also creating a $100-M fund for farmers and the aquaculture industry.

Meanwhile, the FFAW says the announcement was long overdue, but includes some very welcome support for those in the industry who have sought income security and debt relief since the pandemic began.
President Keith Sullivan says the $470-million program acknowledges the vital role the industry plays in the economy of rural communities, and recognizes the impacts that COVID-19 has had on workers’ livelihoods.
While the measures announced Thursday do not address each of its recommendations, the FFAW is hopeful that further programs will be announced soon to address other concerns—such as Employment Insurance benefits.
