Even the most seasoned outdoors people can get into trouble.
Adventure Smart Presenter and Search and Rescue volunteer Melanie O’Brien says people rarely expect something to go wrong when they head out but there is a new tool to ensure people are prepared.
O’Brien says the Adventure Smart App is free and follows a “three-T model” which covers trip planning, training and taking the essentials.
She says when you create your trip plan, it asks for detailed information, including where you are heading and who you are going with. As well, she says it is important to tell someone who is not going with you.
It is also available through a web browser.

O’Brien says the app gives people tips on what they should bring depending on the activity chosen, along with a way to share where they are headed with others.
With the Victoria Day long weekend upon us, she says it is important to keep safety top-of-mind.
O’Brien says getting outside is significant now, more than ever.
She says a lot of people may be looking forward to trying the East Coast Trail, a nature walk, a paddle or a ride on the quad and that is good to escape the gloomy news that has been around for a little while.
