Another summer event in St. John’s has been cancelled due to COVID-19, one that has been a tradition for close to 200 years.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Garden Party will not be going ahead as it usually does on the third Wednesday of July. An alternative date will not be scheduled at this time as large gatherings are not currently permitted due to public health orders.
The event began as a small affair when Government House was built in 1831. The garden party officially became a public event in 2003. Last year, nearly 2,000 people attended.
Public access to the grounds of Government House is still allowed. People are encouraged to enjoy the space as long as physical distancing measures are followed.
