What will amateur sports look like once public health restrictions are lifted and how many minor sport leagues will survive?
That’s the question pollster and avid sports fan Tim Powers is asking in light of a recent Abacus Data poll.
One in four Canadian adults asked regularly took part in an organized sport or group physical activity before the pandemic. That works out to about 8.1 million Canadians.
Despite that, Powers says till now little to no supports have been announced for minor league sports and recreation committees.
The onus now falls on those groups to ensure that the appropriate measures are in place and he suspects that some groups won’t make it to the other side of the pandemic.
Powers says this is different than the bailouts being sought by major league sports like the CFL, many amateur sports leagues are wondering if they will survive, or whether they will be ready when the kids are ready.
