A coalition from three different provinces that includes the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union is calling on the federal government to provide an emergency response to save the shrimp fishing season from danger.
The Gulf Shrimp Coalition is requesting a number of support measures, including 2020 fishing permits be waived, modify support programs to be more accessible to first nations communities, and extend the salary subsidy program to cover the entire season.
The coalition feels that DFO does not understand the magnitude of the crisis and is requesting an urgent meeting with the Fisheries Minister, Bernadette Jordan.
