At least one of the Liberal leadership candidates is promising not to have a snap election in the fall.
The House of Assembly has passed a private member’s motion that a budget be voted on before an election can be called.
Interim Supply runs out September 30, so a budget would have to be brought in several weeks prior to allow for debate.
Opposition Leader Ches Crosbie has written both Liberal leadership candidates seeking their intentions regarding an election, and one of them, Andrew Furey, says there is no appetite for a fall election. He did not get more specific.
Crosbie feels the new Premier should at least serve out the remainder of the year. Either John Abbott or Andrew Furey will become Liberal leader and Premier-elect on August 3.
The rules dictate that an election must be called within 12 months after the swearing-in.
