June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis people across Newfoundland and Labrador.
A sunrise ceremony is normally held at Bannerman Park to kick off the celebrations, but it could not go ahead due to COVID-19.
This year the First Light St. John’s Native Friendship Centre is bringing celebrations online.
Chief Mi’sel Joe of the Miapukek Mi’kmaq began the day with a virtual message.
He acknowledged the remains of Demasduit and her husband Nonosabasut—two of the last Beothuck that were returned to Newfoundland this year.
Virtual concerts will be happening throughout the day on the First Light NL Facebook page.
