The pedestrian mall in Downtown St. John’s is getting a good response from residents despite the cool weather over the weekend, but the beautification process is still being worked on.
Gaylynne Gulliver with Downtown St. John’s says business owners are thankful and happy to have the support of the general public.

She says Downtown St. John’s is planning to make more changes as the weeks progress.
Gulliver says people are going to see more colourful chairs, flower pots, banners, and other items to create a happy and pretty environment for people using the outdoor mall.
The pedestrian mall will run from July 3 to September 7, from noon to 10 p.m. daily.
City officials overall are pleased with how things went during the first weekend for the downtown pedestrian mall as businesses, shoppers, joggers, dogs, and bicycles took over part of the main drag.
Smoking is not permitted within the sectioned area, and Mayor Danny Breen says signs to that effect will be going up this week.
Businesses outside the designated area have applied to City Hall for privileges similar to those of their competitors within the zone, such as having a deck.
Mayor Breen says the matter will come up at today’s council meeting. He anticipates a favourable response tonight to allow those outside the “special events” zone to proceed with their decks as well.
