The Liberal Party has had to explain itself after questions were raised about the process to vet supporters who have signed up to vote for the next party leader.
Memorial University Political Scientist Kelly Blidook says adding to the controversy is the impression that the Liberal leadership race is about more than just selecting a party leader.

He says the narrative around it has been one of trying to get everyone to sign up to elect a premier. That’s not how the system works, says Blidook.
He says the biggest concern for the Liberals is the infiltration of people who don’t have the best interests of the party at heart. But Blidook wonders, in retrospect, if party officials are not regretting the vetting process.
He says it’s possible none of this is worth it, given that only about one per cent of the people who signed up were cut out of the process.
