Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement advising residents of the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas of a “prolonged period” of winter weather stating tomorrow evening and continuing through to Thursday evening.
Both areas can expect a prolonged period of freezing rain – lasting 6 to as long as 18 hours – and potential snowfall amounts in excess of 10 cm.
Showers will start tomorrow afternoon, changing to rain or freezing rain as temperatures drop below 0.
There is also the possibility that some areas could see an accumulation of snow.
Precipitation could continue through Wednesday night into Thursday.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says the weather could affect travel plans, causing delays or disruptions.
He says ice could accumulate on trees, roads and power lines, with the possibility of power outages.
Neil cautions however that there is still a lot of uncertainty associated with the system and weather details could change over the next few days.
