Crossbows are now allowed to be used to hunt big game and small game species in the province – something that has been long awaited by hunters.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the last province to have the regulations changed.
The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Joseph Pennell, says he and other hunters have been pushing for this for a long time.
Pennell says crossbow is one of the most popular forms of hunting in the United States.
Although they are thrilled, Pennell says they are pushing safety and research since the government is not requiring a course to be completed before hunting with crossbow.
He recommends that people not rush into hunting with crossbow. Pennell says hunters should do research, join online groups, get a mentor and practice handling one before they head out.
The federation says another issue themselves along with the vendors would like addressed is the minimum draw weight. He says they recommended a 150-pound draw weight, but the provincial government hasn’t mentioned anything on that.
