Health Minister John Haggie says officials are checking into reports of a group of US servicemen in St. John’s for a 24-hour layover.
Instead of isolating, members of the group reportedly went clubbing downtown.
Minister Haggie says under provincial legislation they were supposed to have gone straight to their hotel.
Under federal legislation, the group would have had to quarantine for 14 days.
He says there is a jurisdictional issue at play as well. He says international flights fall under the jurisdiction of Canada Border Services, which means the Quarantine Act applies.
In his view, the most stringent requirements should apply but his department is looking into the details.
