The incoming Premier and leader of the provincial Liberal Party says he is not looking at mass layoffs as a way to help curb the province’s debt.
Andrew Furey was responding to Ches Crosbie’s comments following an ipolitics article suggesting he wasn’t ruling out cuts to the public service.
In a statement to VOCM News, Furey says he has spent the first three days since winning party leadership being briefed on the province’s fiscal situation as he prepares to table a budget.
He says he is looking “very closely” at all options available, but states that mass layoffs are not one of them.
Furey is set to be sworn in as the province’s 14th Premier on August 19.
