Three men hauling cod nets in Conception Bay got much more than they bargained for.
The trio was anchored off Freshwater when they hooked something considerably larger than the cod they were out for; namely a 746-pound tuna.
Shawn Drover, Robin Drover and G.G. Meadus landed the fish at Harbour Grace, at which point DFO became involved since their prize was considered bycatch.
It’s not clear yet what will become of the big fish.
The Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery is worth about $10 million annually, but it’s unclear if the three men will be allowed to avail of any proceeds from their catch.
