The list of candidates vying for a vacant seat on St. John’s City Council is getting longer.
Local cartoonist, social activist and podcaster Wallace Ryan has announced his intention to run in Ward 2, as has businessman Lorne Loder.
Former Tory cabinet minister Shawn Skinner, who represented Ward 2 in the mid-1990s, is also in the race along with curler Greg Smith and Ophelia Ravencroft, an academic and community activist.
The by-election became necessary when former councillor Hope Jamieson resigned earlier this summer to take a new position with a national housing organization. At large councillor, Debbie Hanlon has assumed responsibility for Ward 2 until the seat is filled.
Voting will occur by mail-in ballot, with further details expected soon on that process.
Election day is October 20.
