A recent visitor to Little Bay East on the Burin Peninsula says he was shocked that a disgusting problem affecting the community continues to linger.
Peter Whittle says he’s been told herring were driven into the bay back in the spring, where they became trapped and died under the ice.
The rotting carcasses resulted in an algae bloom that’s turned the water green and is causing an overwhelming and choking stink.
He says you can smell it miles before you get to the community. Whittle describes the odour as “unbelievable” and says he could still smell it on his clothes hours later.
Whittle says action has to be taken to help clean up the problem.
