Better enforcement on this province’s highways could have saved the life of a 54-year-old Twillingate woman. That is according to Darlene Mitchell, the sister of Dolores Boyde who was tragically killed in mid-August.
Boyde was reportedly the passenger of a vehicle that left Gander Bay Road while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle on August 14.
Mitchell says the family is still in shock, and they are still seeking answers as nobody has been apprehended.
She says losing a loved one is difficult enough—but to deal with the fact that a reckless driver left her sister in the car to die is beyond anything their thoughts can process.
The family has decided to put together a fundraiser for the Gander Bay Fire Department to purchase hydraulic rescue tools, or Jaws of Life, for their station. She says details will be released soon.
Mitchell says they don’t want to make this situation all about their own family, and to focus only on her sister’s death oversimplifies the major problem on this province’s roads.
Mitchell believes there will be more tragedies like her sister’s if things do not change, with regards to enforcement.
