Rotational workers are calling the latest easing of COVID-19 restrictions “a win” but say more needs to be done.
Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, announced Friday that starting September 9 – and for a four week trial period – workers on rotation in other parts of Canada can call 811 for a COVID-19 test between days five and seven of their self-isolation.
If negative, they no longer have to self-isolate.
Affected workers have essentially been in self-isolation since public health measures were imposed back in March. The Chief Medical Officer of Health thanked them for the sacrifices they’ve made.
Concerns over orders to self-isolate without testing prompted the creation of the Rotational Workers of Newfoundland and Labrador Facebook page, which has around 3500 members.
Jeremy Howell, a rotational worker, says he’s not sure why the provincial government hasn’t followed the lead set by Prince Edward Island, which tests rotational workers on arrival in the province.
