The St. John’s region could be hit with a bus strike in a matter of weeks but the city is still hoping for a resolution.
The Amalgamated Transit Union has broken off talks with the City of St. John’s and is recommending to the 109 drivers that they reject the latest offer and go on strike.
Spokesman Paul Churchill says Metrobus drivers are being treated differently than other city workers when it comes to benefits.
Councilor Dave Lane, who sits on the Transportation Commission, says jurisdictions right across the country just don’t have the resources to increase benefits. He says they are looking at other options to see if there’s a way to address the union’s concerns about benefits. Lane believes there is still some wiggle room.
The earliest that they could go on strike is October 5.
