It was the end of an era in the capital city’s downtown as The Big R on Harvey Road served up its very last platter of fish n’ chips after 60 years in the business.
The restaurant announced late last week that it was closing for good on Sunday.
The Big R’s Blackmarsh Road location will remain open, but most people who turned out yesterday to bid farewell to the famous restaurant agreed, it will be missed.
Karen Forward Lambert, who owns the restaurant, agrees it was a bittersweet moment, but says it was time to move on. She admits she’ll miss the people the most; she says when her daughter was married, 30-40 customers showed up to wish her well.
The restaurant closer has struck a chord with many locals, including renowned musician Patrick Boyle.
Boyle is now living in Victoria, BC, but he shared some fond memories of the Big R on Harvey Road with VOCM’s Brian Callahan:
