Newcomers to Canada can’t vote in elections until they receive their citizenship, but the Association for New Canadians is hosting an event later this week for people to learn about the process.
The ANC is hosting a mock federal election on Wednesday.
A makeshift polling station will be set up and students of the ANC will cast their ballots, with the results being announced before the real election takes place next week.
The Association says for many, this will be their first time experiencing an election of having the opportunity to vote.
Director of Language Services, Leo Etchegary, says students are excited and that is resonating with the teachers at the ANC.
He says the excitement of students has made them more excited about participating in the election. While their students are not eligible to vote yet, Etchegary says the exercise is preparing them for when they can cast a ballot.)
The mock election is taking place at the ANC’s ESL Training centre on Elizabeth Avenue on Wednesday morning.
